OUR STORY

TOSHINEU FOUNDER ANNE GAELLE PHOTO

Like the best of stories, the TOSHINEU journey unfolded from a personal experience.

Having worn and slept in pure silk since she was a child, TOSHINEU founder Anne Gaelle grew up observing her mother using this exquisite fibre in her everyday. When a close Canadian friend asked Anne to source a raw silk duvet similar to her own, she discovered just how saturated the market had become with industrially-produced silk. Spurred by the desire to share the quality of traditionally-made raw silk, Anne left behind the frantic pace of her corporate job in the tech world and launched TOSHINEU in 2018.

As Anne embraced an inner equilibrium and a slower way of living, she began to collaborate with the handful of practising mulberry silk artisans that remain in China today, who continue to work using the closely-kept secrets of silk-making using traditional techniques that have been passed down across generations. It is an artisanal skill that is over a thousand years old and one that produces a silk that is purer, softer, and smoother than the more common industrial version.

Through each TOSHINEU lifestyle product, Anne has made it her mission to revive a craft that is at risk of being lost to industry-standards while preserving a connection to an art that is over a thousand years old.

Her mantra? We are all born to shine from within – just like silk.

OUR PRINCIPLES

TOSHINEU embraces a quiet respect for the earth’s natural cycles, upholding an ancient skill that is at once simple and fine. Guided by our great belief that what once was can continue to serve an important purpose, we collaborate with craftsmen and women who create silk using age-old techniques which may be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. Through TOSHINEU, we strive to preserve a trade that is at risk of being lost to waves of mass-produced silk, reflecting our principles that are deeply rooted in considered consumption, timeless quality, and an unwavering respect for ancestral knowledge.
